2x vs. 3x Leveraged ETFs: What Does the Extra Leverage Change?
Three-times exposure is not simply a faster version of two-times exposure. The extra leverage magnifies favorable compounding in trends, but also losses, recovery requirements, financing costs and dependence on the exact market path.

Four short scenarios show the difference
Every series starts at $100. The first three rows show the ending value after the stated daily index moves. The last row shows the return the remaining capital needs after a 20%, 40% or 60% loss to get back to $100.

The recovery row describes the return required by the fund value. The index move needed to produce it depends on the subsequent daily path.
In a steady trend, 3x can compound to more than three times
Two +10% days produce a 21% index gain. The 2x path gains 44% and the 3x path gains 69%. This is not tracking error: after the first gain, the fund resets exposure from a larger capital base.
That benefit is path-dependent. Alternating gains and losses reverse the effect, as the exact round trip in the table shows.
The most important difference is often drawdown, not ending return
After a 20% index loss in the simplified one-day example, the 2x product has $60 left and the 3x product has $40. From there, 3x needs a 150% return merely to regain its starting value.
A real index crash usually unfolds over many days. Daily rebalancing, trading halts, derivative prices and costs change the outcome. The simple table is therefore a risk yardstick, not a forecast.
One period is not enough to decide
First compare both leverage levels over the same historical period. Then test every available starting point for an equal-length investment horizon. Median outcomes, worst cases, drawdowns and recovery time are more informative than the prettiest chart.
